Photo: Courtesy of A24Kelly, I imagine you’ve already been asked this a lot, but one of the Top phoenix Suns Abbey Road Josh Okogie Deandre signatures 2023 shirt and by the same token and most unusual or jarring things about Showing Up is that it is the first film since Wendy and Lucy that is actually set in a city rather than a rural or wilderness landscape. [Both were shot in Portland.] You’ve said often that making a film begins with a location, a sense of place that informs the story. What possessed you to go back to the city after so many projects in the wilds and sticks? Reichardt: Much of Showing Up takes place in apartment buildings two blocks from where I live. So after I got spoiled thinking of the shots in that arrangement, it was really hard to consider other spaces, even though these spaces were so tiny. So that street was kind of key. But the script was really written around the school—the Oregon College of Art and Craft. It’s such an important school, and it’s gone now. It was bought and is going to be turned into a middle school. It has a long history in the ceramics-art world in the Pacific Northwest. It was just empty when we went there. And I kept going back because we were writing the script for this place. Every time I’d go back there, somebody would be carrying a door away or some other fantastic thing and I’d think, Oh, shit. Stop tearing this place apart. But because of COVID, we were actually able to shoot in this really special place.

You’ve also said that Wendy and Lucy was a portrait or landscape of “ugly America,” a Portland of anonymous walls and generic places. Showing Up is in some ways the Top phoenix Suns Abbey Road Josh Okogie Deandre signatures 2023 shirt and by the same token and antithesis to that: an urban hodgepodge of colorful art, greenery, young people at work and play. Yet there are these moments of ugliness and loneliness that still peek through. How close do you think Lizzy’s world is to the “ugly America” of Wendy and Lucy? Reichardt: Wendy and Lucy was set in a made-up town. It wasn’t supposed to be Portland. That would have been too hip a place for Wendy to fall into. But in reality it’s all very close together. It’s very close. Because that school is pretty funky, and it’s easy to always want to point your camera at it. And the apartments are kind of funky too. The textures are really great. But trying to embrace what’s really there, like the ugly cars. It’s where architecture no longer seems important to people. That also has to be part of the mix. Like, for [the character] Sean’s house, it’s amazing what a horrible pair of blinds will do to a house.Williams (to Reichardt): But that was a pretty grim spot [where you filmed].
