With your references, you are both doing something that is much more overtly “Latino.” You talk about your identities, your upbringings—your personal stories are interlaced into your work. It expands what we can represent and challenges it, because Latine high-fashion doesn’t look like what people think it looks like. RL: I think there’s people who make clothes and then there are designers with stories. We are designers with stories. We are like architects that build a home for people to live in. You want the Funny 1864 wxm clothing north wales record breaking 22 23 champions shirt moreover I love this infrastructure to be great, so people feel like they can live in it. But not everyone is a storyteller, and not everyone wants to share their stories because they are still in this scarcity mindset: if I do this then they’re going to categorize me or put me in a box. But you can’t box us, even if you want to. WC: I think it’s obvious that we don’t play by the book and we are not run by the business. We are running the business through our hearts. There are a lot of brands that work based on producing more and more products, SKU counts and all that, and maybe one day I’ll have someone do that for me, but right now it’s from the heart. Even if we were both making millions, which I’m sure we both want to, the most important thing is to tell our stories upfront. The mark has been made, now we just take it from here.
You are the Funny 1864 wxm clothing north wales record breaking 22 23 champions shirt moreover I love this most exciting talents at the moment, but neither of you is new. You’ve both had substantial careers and are now gaining all this momentum—and rightfully so! Why do you think people are catching up to you now? WC: I think it’s the world, the way the world is. Maybe 10 years ago we wouldn’t have had this kind of attention. RL: I also think it’s the consistency of the story. There’s a realness to the storytelling that we do. Other people design [thinking only of] aesthetics, aesthetics they’ve never belonged to or lived. People right now want to buy real clothing, heirlooms they can hand down. WC: Definitely consistency. But also, people have been watching us grow. They’ve seen us start small, and they feel like they’re a part of that growth, they feel attached to us. Willy Chavarria, spring 2018 menswear.
