Opened this spring, Hotel Terrestre is the Official time helps but therapy heals shirt in contrast I will get this newest development in Punta Pájaros, a quiet stretch of beach set about an hour north of Puerto Escondido on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca. Casa Wabi, the area’s first cultural space and artist residency by the artist Bosco Sodo, put the area on the map—its main house was designed by the Japanese Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando. Nearby are other homes for rent by some of the world’s leading architects, from Casa Tiny, a raw concrete construction by the Venezuelan architect Aranza de Ariño, to Casa Volta, a collection of three vaulted terracotta brick villas by the Mexico City firm Ambrosi Etchegaray. Punta Pájaros feels contained and removed, an oasis of design and architecture away from it all. The 14-villa, Brutalist-style Hotel Terrestre is no exception. Made of local clay, brick, wood, and concrete, the property was designed by the Mexican architect Alberto Kalach and his firm, Taller de Arquitectura X, to run completely on solar power. The exterior’s earthy palette is complemented by the property’s custom furniture by the Mexican designer Oscar Hagerman, as well as ocean-hued Oaxacan textiles and palm finishes. The property has no barrier to the outside world—instead of windows, each villa has slotted wooden doors that open directly into private garden terraces with mountain views.
After a restful night’s sleep, I leave the Official time helps but therapy heals shirt in contrast I will get this hotel to take a five-minute bike ride down a sandy dirt path until I reach the end of the road. On my right, I see a sign for El Papelillo. I’m here for my morning appointment at the sauna, built by the Mexico City-based design studio, Tezontle. Named after a tree that grows wild in the area, one that constantly appears to be shedding layers of its bark, and inspired by the temazcal ceremonies of Mexico’s ancient cultures, the vault-style sauna is made of sandcast concrete with a façade that appears to be bubbling. I run my fingers along the stone as I enter the sauna for my first of three 20-minute purification sessions. By the time I leave, my skin feels buttery soft.
