I’m not afraid of gay people.” The point is that you’re not actually afraid of gay people—you’re afraid of the net set of societal shifts that might be needed to accommodate gay people as something other than a non-class in society, and the ways that would challenge you to look at parts of yourself that you’ve decided that you’re not willing to.

Growing Up, Coming Out is a series of personal reflections from queer American designers, released every day this month. It’s about wanting to exist in a world where everyone can just dress and look how they please without being judged. A lot of people DM us or send us emails to say thank you for representing people like us. Sometimes it can be frustrating that all of this is coming so late, but it’s good that it’s coming at all—that models and designers from our community are being seen and heard. But now that people are hip to it, let’s make sure that real change is happening—that it’s not just clickbait.
